Historic events are often difficult to process while you are in the midst of them, and Kennedy’s death has been hard for me. As a journalist and radio producer, there’s so much to do to make sure you’re covering the basic events,  there’s not time to really reflect on the event’s meaning. Â

With the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, a political dynasty passes into history. What has the clan Kennedy meant for our region, for its Irish immigrant population, for Catholics here and around the country and for liberal political tradition in America? Now that the “lion of the Senate” is gone, will Massachusetts’ liberalism change?


By now, you’ve probably heard. Senator Edward “Teddy” Kennedy, often called ‘the Liberal Lion’ has passed away at his home on Cape Cod. He was 77.


In the last couple of weeks, Governor Patrick has had challengers coming at him from left, right and center, beginning with Tim Cahill. In a surprise move this week, the state treasurer announced he’s shedding his Democratic party affiliation presumably to run against Patrick as an independent.
