This morning, our Senior Producer wheeled around in his chair and asked: “Should we change our show topic?” This doesn’t happen every day but when it does…it’s definitely exciting.
News of Harvard Pilgrim’s former-CEO Charlie Baker joining the gubernatorial race sealed the deal. Between Treasurer Tim Cahill leaving the Democrats and Christy Mihos taking another stab at the Governor’s Office, we feel we have a solid show.
So let’s talk about it. Who are these candidates and will the Governor face an uphill battle to keep his seat? It’s all on the docket for this Friday. But first, I want to talk about today’s newsmaker: Charlie Baker.
A seemingly polished individual, my endless searches through blogs, newspapers, media sites, and archived material only garner good reviews and solid feedback. Titles are thrown; “Savior of Harvard Pilgrim,” or “Experienced Aide,” and “Dedicated family man” are just a few. We expect to hear from Baker for the first time at a press conference slated to take place at 3pm today.
Back in March, a Boston Globe article wondered outloud whether Baker could be the Massachusetts GOP’s saving grace. Some Bay State Republicans are hopeful, spending much of today screaming hallelujahs and cheering for this “true Yankee Republican.” Fiscal conservatism is the name of the game but some critics are not so sure Baker has the clearest record.
Mike Widmer, President of the Massachusetts Taxpayer’s Association remembered: “”When Charlie was head of A&F, the state borrowed against future federal highway aid. We’re paying for that now.” He goes on to add “”How much of what happened on his watch is what we’re having to pay for now?” It is a fair question and one I am sure Baker is prepared to answer. That and many others.
This afternoon. David Kravitz of the Blue Mass Group’s posted three questions for Baker on his blog.
- Where do you stand on abortion/choice?
- Where do you stand on same-sex marriage?
- Where do you stand on casinos and slot machines?
They seem pretty basic but the truth is this: we actually don’t know where he falls along the spectrum.
While this announcement (even though it along with a few others moved us to change our show topic) did not come out of thin air, we still have many questions. We imagine you do too.
Governor’s Race 2010. Tune in this Friday at 1pm.

great a CEO was profited from manatory health insurance and screwed the majority of people in mass. with higher cost or a fine if u dont have it. Plus the far-right radio heads in mass are happy about him so something gotta be up.
Ask him why is he Allowing these same insurance companies to deny(RATION)care not based on need but for a bigger profit.
how about u ask him?
1.where does he stand about denying health care to the sick and retro-activity revoking it?
2.where does he stand about getting paid millions to do so?
3.where does he stand, even know over 90 percent of people in mass are now covered the price and cost of health care keeps going up?
4. social programs, schools, and if he is going to be able to work with the president, i hate to see him pull what the South C. Governor tried.
Lastly why did u or anyone ever report about romneys claim about a surplus he and Kerri H. had when she ran for governor yet when Patrick got in office it was not there.
