…and who would review the opera?

This week, we are imagining a Boston without the Boston Globe.

It doesn’t look pretty.

I have been tasked with finding someone to answer a very specific question: what would the Boston arts scene look like without a Boston Globe critic

Sure there are blogs and alternative weeklies and local magazines and local newspapers….but a Globe review carries a certain amount of weight. We simply cannot deny it.  Imagine a New York Times without the book review.  It’s a potentially enormous loss to the community.

While media is indeed changing, many people still rely on the Globe for quality, in-depth reviews of local theater, music, art, ballet, and opera productions (to name just a few).   Not to mention what a good or bad review can do to an artist….

That’s an entirely different conversation.

Are reviews important to you? What would the arts scene look like without the Globe?  Are blogs and smaller papers enough to keep you satisfied?  Comment below and make sure to tune into our show this Friday and Saturday at 1pm EST.

Very interesting question. I think one of the things a paper like the Globe does, is let everyone know what of import is going on in the city. Of course, the Globe could never include everything of interest, but it is a great way to see what the big events of the week or weekend are, and to get some context for those events. Great blog entry Jessica!
