Beantown Blues: Making it on the Boston Music Scene

As the poster says, Boston Rocks. But how hard?

Radio Boston goes on location at the Flophouse, and takes you inside the modern Boston music scene. We profile three bands: Township, The Mmoss, and The Jody Grind. We hear from a Boston superstar, Greg Hawkes of the Cars. And, we talk with music critic Brett Milano on how the scene has changed and if a band like the Cars could make it in Boston today.

When it comes to music videos, we lost count after MTV2, so we started our own rbTV.

First on the v-playlist, a little tease from our afternoon at the Flophouse:

AT THE SUMMIT: Greg Hawkes brings The Cars to Radio Boston

music-show-037.jpg Greg Hawkes was keyboardist for the 80s mega-group, the Cars. (In case you couldn’t tell, Hawkes is the man on the left. The grinning giant on the right is Radio Boston technical director, Tim Skoog, who declared in the sixth grade, "When I grow up, I want to be Greg Hawkes of the Cars.")

The Boston music legend now strums his ukulele for The New Cars, and for Radio Boston… He performed a one-time only special rendition of the Cars classic, "You Might Think". It will live on our iPods forever.

ON THE RISE: The Family Township

Townshipis hot. They won the WBCN Rock ‘n Roll Rumble. They crashed a Neil Young show at the Orpheum. They were nominated for Outstanding rock band of the year at the Boston Music Awards. And, they played a live set just for Radio Boston:

It’s hard not to love a band that describes itself as:

"The secret soon revealed itself that the band contained Vermont native and Cancer Conspiracy drummer, Greg Beadle and Boston’s Runner and the Thermodynamics fron tman, Marc Pinansky and Spitzz’s John Sheeran. In just a year and a half, Township has been featured in internationally released commercials and videos, and shared stages with acts ranging from Incubus and Perry Ferrel, to the Fiery Furnaces and Richard Lloyd of Television. With two EP’s under their belt and a full length due in November," (and Meghna’s favorite part): "These classic rock worshiping guys don’t just live the music, they are the music."

Judge for yourself, with these live tracks (performed exclusively for Radio Boston) from their upcoming 2008 album, Coming Home:

AT THE FOOT OF THE MOUNTAIN: The Mmoss and The Jody Grind

The Cars have reached the summit of Boston musical success. Township is well on its way up. But for most Boston bands, it’s a long, arduous stay at base camp, with no pay, no radio play, and no way to a major record contract. The least likely to make it big, however, may be the ones who love the music the most.

Radio Boston’s Meghna Chakrabartidropped into a recent Flophouse Session with just such a band, The Mmoss(pictured at left). The band describes its forte as the "psyched out 60s folk-rock-pop thing." Some groovy live tracks:

"Whistle Wind"

"Little Black Cat"

"Force of Mine"

music-show-037.jpgNot to be outdone in the retro-rock movement rumbling through the Boston underground music scene, there’s The Jody Grind.

Fronted by singer Sara Colb(pictured at right), the band is a free-for-all combo of traditional blues, soul, and a little rose-colored pop. Think a detoxed Janis Joplin who just passed the New York bar exam, backed by a bunch of boys straight out of a brick-and-ivy Boston campus.

Here they are performing live, the Muddy Waters classic, "I Got My Mojo Working". McKinley Morganfield has got the mojo. Sara Colb does the work.

Great show and a we love the mando!

    You might think I’m crazy… but…

please, how does one out here on the other side of iPodistan get a copy or link of the MP3 - say if I wanted to send it (as a link or file) to my wannabe girlfriend?

I’ve tried reverse engineering your code and maybe this is your objective, but hey, it IS a bit gnarly and you do somewhat imply that we can get an mp3 for our own ipods.

keep up the great radio work!

    DL
